How to get rid of the lingering smell from your home

I lived in a high rise apartment and the ventilation wasn’t great. When I cooked the smell lingered in the house, it felt good at the moment.

But…

The smell stayed and, it stayed that day and the next day and the day after…

You get the point!

this is the reason I decided to start making candles. If you’re like me and your Olfactory works on the next level - it’s called hyperosmia ( You’re welcome!) you know how annoying it is.

Headache, irritation and nausea are just some of the effects we feel when we do not like a smell, righhhht?

So, I have put together a few steps you can take to get rid of that annoying garlic smell after the delicious food you cooked.

You can of course always buy eco-friendly, and zero-waste VIPASA candles and refills to feel relaxed and get rid of that smell.

Ok, let’s get to it.

Clean those Pots and Pans

The faster the residue food is put away, the better you will control the smell in the house. Pots are in the sink to be put away in the dishwasher? It’s a recipe for smell overload ( pun intended )

Store cooked food in fridge

Store the extra cooked food

If you are doing batch cooking for the next few days or just for lunch or dinner. If you’re like me, you cook more than you can eat in one sitting. If immediately put away the food in glass containers and let it rest, it will be cool enough to go into the refrigerator when you are finished with your meal.

Wipe the kitchen surface(s)

After cleaning pots, putting the extra food away and composting, I use the homemade surface cleaner to wipe the countertops. And also the kitchen cabinets.

Counter space gets messy very quickly, that onion skin or peeled garlic smell can quickly spread around. Onions and garlic are members of the allium family. They're similar in composition and contain many of the same sulfur compounds. Sulfur compounds give foods their distinctive flavour. They also release distinctive gasses when cut or mashed ( Source: Healthline)

Lemon is your best friend for cleaning

Lemons have a strong, astringent smell that clears the air of disagreeable odours while imparting a fresh citrus aroma.

  • it helps to leave a small piece of lemon in the refrigerator to keep it smelling fresh.

  • Simmer lemon peel or Orange peel in a pot of water for a fresh whole-house scent.

  • Wiping the floor with a Lemon fragrant floor cleaner is a win-win

It’s natural and effective. Mother nature, eh?

BAKING SODA

Baking soda absorbs the smell, so it’s a good idea to keep a bowl of baking soda around when you’re making something that is stinky—especially acidic foods like tomatoes, fish, or veggies. baking soda will balance the pH, neutralizing the odours along the way.

Burn some candles

before you sit on the couch to watch your favourite Netflix show, light our VIPASA candles. You can choose from Foroaise - invoking the smell of Cedarwood, Oakmoss and musk; Tusara - notes of bittersweet Lily-of-the-valley and hearty Cyclamen.
