Natural wax vs Paraffin wax

Do you know what your candles are made of?

Unfortunately, extensive market research has revealed that up to 95% of the candles available in the market today are made of Paraffin wax.

What is paraffin?

Well, paraffin is a by-product of petroleum, it is cheaper to make, readily available and, quite frankly, customers are not made aware of its potential health implications.

In recent years, Paraffin wax candles have been known for their negative effects – right down to polluting the environment. They are, as we mentioned, a by-product of petroleum (it is what’s called an “occlusive" agent — meaning it can seal off the skin from air, water or anything else getting in, or out so it’s most definitely not good for you) and additional chemicals are added to ensure that the fragrance binds in the wax.

They then produce a black petrol-soot which is (you guessed it) full of toxins – those black marks on walls or the ceiling where a paraffin wax candle had been burning? Yep, there’s a reason for them. And worryingly,  the released toxins from the wax can affect the human body, causing things like respiratory irritation. It’s almost as if we are inhaling polluted air inside our own home.
